Silver Star Families and Soldiers' Angels will be working together to give hand-held entertainment units to our wounded. These games will speed up the healing process for our servicemen and women, as well as entertain them.
"Poly Trauma patients enjoy the games, and increase their hand eye coordination," said Steve Newton, President and Co-founder of The Silver Star Families of America. An article on The Washington Post site quotes the folks at Walter Reed hospital in DC, who report that videogames make excellent therapy sessions for soldiers wounded in the Iraq conflict. In addition to the obvious medical benefits of refining motor control via controllers, the entertainment allows soldiers to reconnect to experiences they may have had prior to their combat experiences. Therapists see the games benefiting patients with nearly any kind of injury, including patients with traumatic brain injuries.
Says Newton, "We are honored to join with Patti Patton Bader, and her wonderful team at the Soldiers' Angels, to put smiles on the faces of our wounded, and to help in any way we can."
Patti Bader, founder of the Soldier Angels, when told of the need stated, "Let's get this done."
The two organizations are accepting donations, and will purchase and distribute the games.
Soldiers Angels has been supporting our nation's military men and women since 2003. Their mission is to ensure that no soldier feels unloved. They provide aid and comfort to the military and its families, which may include immediate response to hardship situations. They start with letters, care packages, and comfort items to our deployed. They also help our military families here at home as requested. For more info go to www.soldiersangels.org
The Silver Star Families of America is an organization that remembers, honors and assists the wounded of our Armed Forces by presenting them Silver Star Banners and Certificates. They also distribute care packages when the need arises, and they act as an advocate and education resource for the wounded and their families. You can find information about Silver Star Families of America on their web site. www.silverstarfamilies.org
SSFOA is also collecting "fast food" gift cards for our wounded.
